‘The Crown’s’ Final Season To Be Split Into Two Parts

The Crown’s reign on Netflix is about to come to an end, with the streaming platform announcing the premiere date for the series’ sixth and final season.

Following in the footsteps of other popular Netflix series, such as Stranger Things and The Witcher, the finale season of The Crown will be split into two parts, with the first four episodes premiering on 16 November 2023. The second half comprises six episodes and will follow four weeks later on 14 December.

The teaser dropped by Netflix gives audiences a look at Imelda Staunton’s (Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix, Maleficent) current portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II. After the voiceover of Olivia Colman (Secret Invasion, The Favourite), the previous holder of the mantle, comes on with the statement that being queen “is not a choice; it is a duty, Staunton’s voice continues, “But what about the life I put aside?”. It serves as a precursor to the monarch’s conflict about her duty and how it has weighed her down, which will be explored further in the upcoming season.

Executive producer Suzanne Mackie (Mad Dogs, Calendar Girls) told The Hollywood Reporter that Staunton’s performance and the finale’s conclusion are worth the wait between the two parts.

“I am really, really proud of this final season. I think it’s some of our best work,” Mackie said in August. “Imelda is extraordinary as the queen, she really is. And I don’t want to spoil the very end, but it’s really beautiful and, I think, quite profound, and it feels like a culmination of a very long journey.”

Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana in The Crown

Fans will be excited to see The Crown’s portrayal of significant events between 1997 to 2005, such as the relationship between Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) and the 1997 car crash in Paris that killed them, as well as the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams). The accident will be covered in the first part of the final season, while the latter is explored in the latter half.
