Smaller & Lighter PlayStation 5 Consoles Are Coming With Digital Edition Price Hike

With the holiday season approaching quickly; there is a need for many to consider gifts for friends and family. For gamers who have yet to taste the goodness of the PlayStation 5, there is good news on that front. Sony has revealed the new PS5 models that will be launching for the season this November, with a smaller form factor and 1TB storage for both the base and Digital Edition.

In comparison, the new PS5 consoles are reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% (Digital Edition). Instead of two large panels, there are now four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains matte. For those planning to get the Digital Edition, there is also the optional Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 that can be purchased separately. This add-on only works for the new models.

The improvements in sizing and weight do come with a caveat, particularly for those who prefer to game digitally. There will be a price increase of US$50 for that model, and if you are getting the additional disc drive, that’s more money being spent.

The recommended retail prices for the new PlayStation 5 models are:

  • U.S.
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – US$499.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – US$449.99
  • Europe
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
  • U.K.
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
  • Japan
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥66,980 (includes tax)
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥59,980 (includes tax)

Furthermore, a vertical placement will not be possible without the new Vertical Stand that will be compatible with all PS5 models, which will be sold separately as well. A horizontal stand is included by default, so you are safe if that’s your preferred orientation.

The new consoles will also come with new customisation options starting in early 2024, with a variety of Console Cover colours, including an all-matte Black colourway and the Deep Earth Collection colours in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver, with more on the way.

Once the current inventory of PlayStation 5 consoles has been sold, these new versions will be the default moving forward.
