The first trailer for the new Star Wars Disney+ series, Skeleton Crew, has just been released, and it’s packed with action, adventure, and a nostalgic nod to classic coming-of-age tales. Set against a rendition of Peter Schilling’s Major Tom song, the trailer introduces viewers to a group of mischievous kids who find themselves on an unexpected journey across the galaxy as they try to find their way back to their home planet.
Skeleton Crew, which stars Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) as Force user Jod Na Nawood, promises a mix of thrills and spills as he tries to protect a group of children from various dangers, including space pirates eager to catch them. The trailer showcases a sequence of events where Law’s character rescues the kids, only to continue evading persistent threats.
Visually, the trailer does not hold back. It features fast-paced chases, space battles, encounters with giant alien creatures, and skirmishes with quirky yet menacing pirates. Skeleton Crew clearly draws inspiration from the adventurous spirit of films like The Goonies (1985), emphasising a youthful spirit of discovery and camaraderie. The backdrop of the series is set around the same era as season 3 of The Mandalorian, suggesting possible tie-ins or further expansions on narratives introduced in Skeleton Crew.
Alongside Law, Skeleton Crew features performances by Kerry Condon (Better Call Saul) as Fern’s mother, Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as the droid SM 33, Tunde Adebimpe (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Wim’s father, and Jaleel White (Family Matters) as Gunter. The young cast includes Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Encanto) as Wim, Kryiana Kratter as KB, Robert Timothy Smith as Neel, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Firestarter) as Fern, who bring the adventurous group of kids to life.
Created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, known for their work on MCU’s Spider-Man films, and produced alongside Star Wars veterans like Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson, Skeleton Crew is set to debut on Disney+ on 3 December with a double episode premiere.
