Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare’s latest new release since 2019’s Anthem, is already making waves since its launch on 1 November, rising up the charts as Electronic Arts’ (EA) biggest single-player game on Steam.
At the time of writing, the title has amassed an all-time Steam player count of 89,418, ranking third place on the platform’s top 100 selling games by revenue, surpassing EA’s previous top ranker, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which attained an all-time peak of 67,855 players.

This achievement is a notable one for sure, especially since the game suffered from a troubled development cycle, plagued with several delays, concept changes and high staff turnover. An impressive feat, all things considered, and one that was predicted by EA CEO Andrew Wilson during a prior earnings call, citing BioWares “return to its strengths”, coupled with limited competition due to the delay of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows as part of its success factors.
Alas, this hopeful news of BioWare’s resurgence does not come without its own fair share of disappointments, notably that the company has no plans, at least for now, for any post-launch game expansions, which comes as a shame considering the success of previous DLC releases such as the Awakening expansion for 2009’s Dragon Age: Origins and more recently, the Trespasser DLC for 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition.

This disappointment was confirmed during an interview between Rolling Stone and BioWare creative director John Epler, who stated that the studio had shifted its full attention to their upcoming project, the next Mass Effect. That being said, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will still receive improvement patches and smaller content updates.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released on 1 November 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
