Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 & 3 Reportedly Wrap Filming

Squid Game, the sensational Korean drama that captivated a global audience on Netflix, is gearing up for an explosive return with not just one, but two more seasons. Following its record-breaking debut as one of the most-watched survival thriller K-dramas, the series is now set to release Season 2 in the latter half of 2024.

Recently, reports have surfaced indicating that both the second and third seasons of Squid Game have been filmed concurrently. Although Netflix initially denied these reports, stating last year that their focus was solely on the second season, multiple insiders have confirmed the simultaneous production, stating, “It’s true that Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed at the same time. To be precise, a long story was filmed, which will be split and released as Seasons 2 and 3.”

According to a recent report from the Korean media outlet OSEN, filming for the upcoming seasons wrapped up in June 2024, concluding an 11-month schedule that began in July of the previous year.

Following the completion of filming, the cast and crew reportedly celebrated in Gapyeong, marking the end of a strenuous production phase. The approach taken mirrors that of shooting a long story, which is then segmented into Seasons 2 and 3 for release. This method allows for a cohesive storytelling experience, reducing the gap between seasons and maintaining narrative continuity.

Season 2 of Squid Game is slated to feature six episodes, with the third season expected to have six to seven episodes. This format aligns with the release strategy used for Netflix’s other hit K-drama The Glory, which also saw closely timed sequential season releases. In response, Netflix released a statement which reads, “We’re in the final stages of preparing for the release of Squid Game Season 2. We can’t provide definitive details about Season 3 yet.”

The upcoming seasons will see the return of stars from the first season, including Lee Jung Jae, Wi Ha Joon, Lee Byung Hun, and Gong Yoo. They will be joined by newcomers such as Lee Jin Wook, Park Gyu Young, and Park Sung Hoon, adding depth and intrigue to the already dynamic ensemble.

Hwang Dong Hyuk, who directed, wrote, and produced the initial season of Squid Game, continues his role for the new seasons. His groundbreaking work earned him the distinction of being the first Asian to win Best Director at the 74th Emmy Awards, promising fans that the upcoming seasons will maintain the high standards set by the show’s debut.

While Netflix remains tight-lipped about the specifics of Season 3, anticipation is building as fans eagerly await the continuation of the gripping narrative that has revolutionised the landscape of global television with its unique blend of suspense and social commentary. As Squid Game prepares to unfold new chapters, viewers are poised for more heart-pounding drama and ingenious game designs in the twisted world of this beloved series.

Squid Game Season 2 is set to air sometime in 2024.
