Sentry Makes Villainous Debut In Explosive Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts*’ Super Bowl Trailer

Forget the Super Bowl halftime show, the real action is in the new Thunderbolts* trailer, where Marvel’s anti-heroes face off against a terrifying new threat: the Sentry. With Captain America: Brave New World set to introduce Red Hulk, Marvel isn’t slowing down, giving fans an extended look at its upcoming anti-hero ensemble, showcasing the squad’s unique skill sets while teasing the long-rumored primary antagonist, Sentry.

Director Jake Schreier’s film will bring together some of the MCU’s most morally ambiguous figures, forming a team that has drawn comparisons to The Suicide Squad (2021). Florence Pugh’s Yelena, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost all take centre stage, showcasing their dysfunctional dynamic as they prepare for battle.

While previous footage focused on Valentina Allegra de Fontaine assembling her team and hinting at the Avengers’ absence, this new Thunderbolts* trailer shifts attention toward the looming threat above them. For the first time, the trailer offers a clear shot of what the team has been staring at in terror — an imposing figure with long, dark hair. That moment confirms that Thunderbolts will introduce Robert Reynolds, better known as Sentry, a hero-turned-unpredictable force with the power of a million exploding suns.

For those familiar with Marvel Comics, Sentry’s inclusion signals major trouble ahead. Reynolds isn’t just an overpowered Superman-like figure, he also harbours a dark alter ego known as The Void, the living embodiment of all his worst impulses. This revelation suggests that the film will lean into the psychological struggle between Reynolds and his malevolent counterpart, forcing the Thunderbolts to confront a threat far beyond their usual scope. A group primarily made up of non-superpowered fighters will be facing off against an unstable powerhouse, raising the question of whether they stand any real chance of survival.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* will open in cinemas on 2 May.
