Seize The Night With The New OPPO R17 And R17 Pro!

Inside a dimly lit nightclub, a mass of bodies stands in front of the stage. But these bodies were not writhing with the beat of the latest electro-pop song, they were listening to the presentation of the latest phone to come out of the Chinese smartphone brand, OPPO.

There was a specific reason OPPO created a press event in a dark nightclub when most would choose to have a press event in a well-lit location. What better way for OPPO to flex their new phone’s camera capabilities? The R17 and R17 Pro both have a camera that was specifically designed to take nighttime photos.

This feat is achieved by upgrading the phone’s camera hardware and software. The R17 series features a software-level AI Ultra-clear Engine which helps the users take better night photos and maximise image quality.

As far as hardware goes, the R17 has a 25MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture. The rear camera isn’t too shabby either, with a 16MP f/1.7 + 5MP f/2.4 camera for the R17. The R17 Pro has a 12MP camera with a variable smart aperture of f/1.5-f/2.4. It comes with Optical Image Stabilisation, which stabilises images which OPPO guarantees will make longer exposures better and not as shaky. Everything that goes into the design of the camera is to create better night shots that are brighter and with lower noise.

The OPPO has its own version of the notch. Instead of just carving out what’s necessary out of the screen for the front camera, OPPO designed the notch to look like a water drop. It creates a really nice transition instead of the sometimes jarring notch some other phones have.

Another design aspect that is of note is the colour choices for the R17. OPPO is calling it a revolutionary gradient design. This “three colour, bi/quad direction gradient design” uses a “light-condensing layer that enables light to flow on the surface of the device.” What that really means is that the colour of the phones shifts and changes depending on the angle of view and the condition of the light. Though it’s something we’ve definitely seen before earlier this year.

Of course, this phone has other amenities that is starting to become standard in phones of this price point. The phone uses Corning Gorilla Glass 6, it comes with 128GB of storage and 6GB DDR4 RAM. The Pro version comes with NFC and a SuperVOOC flash charge that promises to fully charge the device in 50 minutes.

The OPPO R17 will be available on October 6, 2018, while the R17 Pro will be available on November 10, 2018.
