Samsung Debuts Slimmer Galaxy Z Flip 5 And Z Fold 5 But With Bigger Screens

What is that saying again? Bigger is better? Less is more? Either way, Samsung is echoing both expressions at Samsung Unpacked 2023. The Korean tech brand is bringing bigger screens to their popular foldable and flip phones while keeping them slimmer and lighter.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is now fashioned with a 3.14-inch Super AMOLED cover screen — three times bigger than the Flip 4. When flipped, users get a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED Display. With a bigger screen, users can do a lot more on the Flex Window for productivity, as well as customize it to reflect their personalities.

Users can now check their calendars, receive alerts and read and reply to messages from the Flex Window on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Customisation features include graphical clocks, adding images and videos and stylish frames on the Flex Window. In addition, Galaxy Z Flip 5’s new Flipsuit Case provides device protection with a changeable NFC card so users can match their Flex Window design and case design for even more personalisation options.

Most excitingly, the Flex Window now has enough space to add third-party widgets! This means you can control Spotify, check the weather, and other activities of similar nature. You can also access quick settings from the Flex Window on the new Galaxy Z Flip 5, and control sound, adjust brightness, connect to Wi-Fi, enable or disable Bluetooth, turn on Airplane Mode, switch on Flashlight and more with just a simple swipe. Plus, the Flex Window is a whole lot more intuitive now as users can pinch to zoom in or out on it too, as well as activate Multi Widget View with a pinch of the screen.

Taking photos is a lot more fun now with the new Galaxy Z Flip 5. Equipped with a 12MP F2.2 ultrawide camera and a 12MP F1.8 wide camera, users can now take big group shot photos by simply putting their phone wherever they like, making use of the hinge to achieve a unique angle, and holding their hand up to the camera to trigger a three-second timer before snapping the ideal photograph. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 also sports a 10MP F2.2 front selfie Camera.

There have also been improvements to the phone’s Nightography capabilities. The new AI-powered image signal processing algorithm corrects any visual noise that typically spoils low-light images while enhancing details and colour tone. Even from a distance, photos are clearer with the digital 10X zoom.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also much slimmer now, measuring 71.9mm x 85.1mm x 15.1mm when folded — 2mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 — and weighing a mere 187g.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is running on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a 3,700mAh dual battery and comes in a new colour: mint. Other available colours are cream, lavender and graphite. It will be available from 11 August at S$1,498 for 256GB, and S$1,678 for 512GB.

When folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s cover screen is a full rectangle 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED display and measures 67.1mm x 154.9mm x 13.4mm.

One thing that carried over from previous iterations of the Galaxy Z Fold is its durability and water resistance. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has an IPX-8 rating, is strengthened by Armor Aluminum, and uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Geared towards productivity, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 receives an updated taskbar, now with the ability to have up to four recent apps and drag and drop apps into a multi-window view. Its compatibility with the S-Pen Fold Edition means users can take notes at their convenience. With hidden pop-up, an app can continue running in the background, allowing users to watch video content on full screen and chat with friends in a floating pop-up on the side of the screen.

Productivity aside, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has an impressive camera array too. It features a 4MP F1.8 under display camera and a 10MP F2.2 selfie camera on the cover. On its rear, it sports a 12MP F2.2 ultra wide Camera and a rear triple camera system: 12MP F2.2 ultrawide, 50MP F1.8 wide-angle, and 10MP F2.4 telephoto.
