“Would I play a Ken in Barbie 2? Sure, yeah,” Murphy replied. “Let’s read the script, let’s have a conversation.”

Murphy is receiving massive praise for his leading role in Christopher Nolan’s latest epic biopic Oppenheimer. In the movie, the 47-year-old actor plays physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who developed and designed the world’s first atomic bomb.

The movie also stars Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Jack Quaid, Rami Malek and Matt Damon amongst others.

Oppenheimer opened against Barbie – Greta Gerwig’s latest comedy with Margot Robbie as the titular character Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Beach Ken. Barbie set the weekend box office record for a female director when it opened, making film history.

Both Oppenheimer and Barbie topped the global box office with an explosive US$511 million opening, living up to its status as a cultural phenomenon following the Barbenheimer craze.

In Barbie, the plastic doll steps into the real world and learns what it means to be a woman. The movie had other variants of Barbie and Ken played by actors like Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emma Mackey and more. You can read our review here.

Getting the perfect ensemble for Barbie was of utmost importance, with casting director Allison Jones saying, “We needed actors who could get the fact that our Barbie only knew pleasant things.”

It’s still too early to tell if a Barbie sequel is warranted, but if Gerwig ever wants a second-go, Murphy’s first in line.

Oppenheimer and Barbie are now showing in cinemas.
