Rocketman Director Takes Over The Helm For Sherlock Holmes 3 Starring Robert Downey Jr.

After telling the story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years in Rocketman, director Dexter Fletcher will soon embark on a new narrative – this time, with the character cast of the Sherlock Holmes movies.

Previously helmed by Guy Ritchie, the big screen adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuthing masterpiece saw Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective and Jude Law as the ever-trusty Watson. With Sherlock Holmes 3 now in the pipeline, the Iron Man actor has hopped on board to reprise his role, while the latter is expected to make a return as well.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. always had plans for a third film, but Downey’s hectic schedule as Iron Man presented a delay in any new filming. Since Phase 3 of MCU has met its, well, endgame, with Avengers: Endgame, the wheels of development is expected to move ahead at full steam.

It’s only natural that the Sherlock Holmes franchise is seeing a continuation (no shit, Sherlock, basically), especially with the previous two films putting up a good performance at the international box office. The forthcoming title is currently tied to a December 21, 2021 release, but considering how it has been pushed back from the initial opening on Christmas Day of 2020, that might not be the finalised date.

Still, it’s a while since the dynamic duo of Sherlock and Watson showed off their intellectual and combat (sometimes) prowess on the silver screen, so their return would most certainly be welcome. In any case, there’s plenty of Sherlock Holmes to go around – Henry Cavill and Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown will star as Sherlock and Enola Holmes respectively as well, in light of Legendary’s upcoming Enola Holmes movie adaptation.
