Ridley Scott Says Fede Álvarez’s ‘Alien: Romulus’ Movie Is “F***ing Great”

Ridley Scott has seen Fede Álvarez‘s director’s cut of Alien: Romulus – and he loved it!

Speaking to Guillermo del Toro at the DGA Latino Summit 2023, Álvarez confirmed that his director’s cut of the new Alien sequel is finished and that he recently “had to go through the incredibly tense process of obviously sending it to Ridley Scott.” Scott is a lead producer on Alien: Romulus and directed the original 1979 Alien movie.

Álvarez wanted Scott to see the director’s cut before anyone else and was terrified of what he had to say.

“Everyone gave me the head’s up that Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, particularly if it has something to do with his movies. He was really tough on Blade Runner 2049 which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had issues with it,” said the director.

Scott watched the movie alone and met with Álvarez soon after to share his thoughts.

“He walks into the room and he did say, ‘Fede, what can I say? It’s f***ing great,'” continued Álvarez.

“For me it was like… My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, who I admired so much, to even watch a movie I made but particularly something like this… and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it. One of the best compliments he said was, ‘The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?’ Yes!”

Alien: Romulus tells a new story within the Alien universe after Scott’s prequel films Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017). While plot details have yet to be revealed, Alien: Romulus will center a group of young people in a distant world who find themselves in confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), and Isabela Merced (Dora and Friends: Into the City!). It is slated to release on 16 August 2024.
