When you think of ultraviolent fighting game Mortal Kombat, who are the first two characters that come to mind?
If you said Scorpion and Sub-Zero, congratulations: you’re one of the normal ones. The two rival ninjas are arguably the most popular characters of the franchise (they were on the cover of the last two games, after all), but for some reason, it looks like they might not be appearing in the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot movie.
The news was revealed in a recent report by The Hashtag show, which listed the cast of characters that would appear in the James Wan-produced film. Mainstays like Liu Kang, Raiden, Sonya Blade and Kano were mentioned, along with a brand new character named Cole Turner assuming the lead role (and the award for “most generic name” goes to…).
In a recent series of Tweets, however, writer Greg Russo said that this was “NOT the full list of characters” and based off an older version of the script. This means that there’s still a chance for Scorpion and Sub-Zero to be included, and we’re seriously hoping that’s the case.
There’s currently no release date planned for the film, but considering that Wan said in 2016 that he doesn’t want to “rush into it“, we’re not going to hold our breaths.
Jared grew up on a healthy diet of Spider-Man comics and video games, and considers defeating his first dragon in Skyrim to be one of his greatest achievements in life. When he’s not giving in to his Funko Pop addiction, you can find him training to become a professional wrestler (no, really).
