Pokémon Taking Over Van Gogh Museum In Surprise Collaboration This Sept

An association between Pokémon and Van Gogh is the last thing fans would expect, but here we are. The Pokémon Company has announced a surprise collaboration with Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which is set to kick off on 28 September.

As per the official announcement post, more information about the event is “coming soon”. A teaser trailer, however, offers a glimpse of what to expect – opening with Eevee and Pikachu running through a field of sunflowers, it shows the sky and clouds transforming into brushstrokes. A huge group of Sunflora appears to greet the pair, and a post-impressionist painting of Sunflora is revealed, bringing the video to an end.

It’s unclear what exactly the collaboration will entail, though it seems to suggest a reimagination of the renowned artist’s works. After all, trailer’s end slate is a clear reference to Van Gogh’s 1889 still life painting, Sunflowers, which remains one of his most famous to date.

The Pokémon x Van Gogh Museum event will begin as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet expansion, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC Part One: The Teal Mask, goes live tomorrow, 14 September. This isn’t the first time the company has worked with museums, either in 2022, the Pokémon Fossil Museum hosted virtual tours to educate fans outside of Japan about the world of palaeontology. More recently, a 3D-printed Pikachu was also featured at the Cup Noodle Museum in Yokohama, as part of festivities for Pokémon World Championships 2023.
