Oscars 2026: ‘Sinners’ Breaks Records With 16 Noms

History has been rewritten with the Oscars 2026 nominations. The 2026 Academy Award nominations dropped with Sinners storming the field, earning an unprecedented 16 nods, the most ever for a single film. That breaks the long-standing 14-nomination record held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. While all but one of those titles went on to win Best Picture, Sinners now positions itself as a juggernaut in this year’s race, a feat that cements director Ryan Coogler’s evolution from indie breakout to awards season powerhouse.

The supernatural thriller stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles and Wunmi Mosaku in a supporting turn that has drawn consistent praise across the board. Its nomination tally spans across major and technical categories, including Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Editing, Score, and more — a clean sweep in terms of industry recognition. Coogler, who had two previous Oscar nods under his belt as a producer and songwriter, now lands his first directing and writing nominations. That achievement places him among just a handful of Black filmmakers ever nominated for Best Director (the seventh, to be exact) and the first since Spike Lee in 2019.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another trailed just behind with 13 nominations, including acting nods for Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro, and Sean Penn. It remains a formidable contender after securing wins at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes. Elsewhere in the Best Picture category, nominees include Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Train Dreams.

Some surprises emerged. Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good, the sequel to 2024’s Wicked, failed to land a single nomination despite its predecessor earning ten. James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash managed just two nods, a steep drop from the first film’s nine and even less than The Way of Water’s four. Hamnet’s Paul Mescal, a favourite in early forecasts for his portrayal of William Shakespeare, was left off the acting list, as were Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for their reprises in Wicked: For Good.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein picked up nine nominations, though he was absent from the Best Director field. Norway’s Sentimental Value matched that figure, marking the most Oscar nods ever for a Norwegian film, though curiously it missed out on a Casting nomination — even as four of its actors received individual recognition. Meanwhile, the newly introduced Casting category saw Sinners, One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and The Secret Agent take the spotlight.
