New Scream Movie Headed By Ready or Not Directors Is In The Works

Late last year, it was reported that Spyglass Media Group will be resurrecting the Scream franchise for a fifth movie. Though at that point of time, details of the upcoming film such as who will be working on the film, who will be starring in it, and when is the film looking to be released, were still unknown.

Well, now we finally have some exciting news to share.

According to Discussing Film, it seems that Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be taking on the role of co-directors for the film, with Chad Villella and Kevin Williamson, who wrote the script for the original Scream film, serving as executive producers. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein will be producing the film.

Plot details are scarce but Discussing Film says its sources report that the film will “follow a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.” It remains to be seen if any of the original cast will be coming back or if this iteration will feature an entirely new cast of characters.

At the very least, it looks like the upcoming Scream movie is in good hands with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett who directed 2019’s Ready or Not, which scored a high 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned over US$57.4 million in the box office. A movie all about a girl trying to outlive and outwit a family out to kill her, the pair will be more than ready to tackle the upcoming Scream film.

First released in 1996, the first Scream film was a huge hit in theatres thanks to its self-aware approach to the slasher genre, and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon and a huge favourite amongst horror movie fans.

Production for the film is expected to start sometime in May 2020.
