New Power Rangers Game Titled “Battle For The Grid” Announced!

The Western equivalent of Japanese hit series Super Sentai, Power Rangers certainly played a huge role in the childhood of many 90’s kids, as the superhero quintet inspired awe and mesmerised young viewers with their heroic antics, heat-of-the-action thrills, and general badassery.

It’s only natural that the franchise went on to build a fervent fanbase over the years, releasing one new television instalment after another. Yet, it doesn’t quite deliver on the gaming side of things – none of the past titles has particularly formed a memorable impression, and the latest in the line-up only serves to keep up the trend of negative reception.

With a new Power Rangers said to be in the works, perhaps a change in tide will soon be underway. As per an anonymous leak on 4chan, it reportedly takes on the name of Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, and is slated for release on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One in April 2019. PC launch, meanwhile, sports a later date.

Price wise, Battle for the Grid will be priced at around US$19.99, and a special collector’s edition featuring additional skins priced at US$39.99. Also, pre-orders get you the exclusive Green Ranger V2 skin.

Here are some brief facts gleaned from the game synopsis:

  • Battle for the Grid is helmed by nWay – the developer and publisher of multiplayer mobile game Power Rangers: Legacy Wars – in collaboration with Hasbro and Lionsgate.
  • Described as a “new cross-platform fighting game”, the game will reportedly be available for US$19.99 first across all three consoles.
  • Pre-order can be made via the game’s official website, but a password is needed for access at the time of writing. Once the order has been made, players are entitled to an exclusive bonus of the Green ranger V2 character skin and a digital art book.
  • A special Digital Collector’s Edition will also be up for grabs, which contains the full game download, Season One Pass (inclusive of three new characters, their Arcade story, and a new warrior skin), and exclusive Lord Drakkon V2 and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Pink Rangers character skins – all at the price of US$39.90.

In-game animations, as one might point out, are looking pretty stiff, and the graphics appear rather sub-par, which might raise some eyebrows.

However, it is important to note the appearance of Power Rangers icon Tommy Oliver (who played briefly as the Green Ranger but later the more famously known White Ranger) in the trailer.

This should mean that the folks at nWay mean business with this new title, so here’s hoping that Battle for the Grid will break the duck for bad video games in the franchise!
