Enter the real-life Catbus shuttles, which will make their debut on 11 March 2024, to transport guests around Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park, the home of Ghibli Park. The Catbus is based on the endearing character of the same name from the popular Studio Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro.
This whimsical creation is brought to life using a Toyota APM (Accessible People Mover) electric vehicle as its prototype. Toyota’s electric trolley was initially designed to shuttle athletes and staff for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Multiple modifications have been made to look and feel like the Catbus from the movie.
The real-life Catbus can accommodate only six passengers, including the driver, and offers a maximum speed of 19 kilometers per hour. While it may not have a furry exterior, plush seats reminiscent of those seen in the movie will be featured on board.
