My Hero Academia fans are in for a double delight. As the steam picks up for the development of Season 7, a fourth film for the anime series was announced to be in the works.
The upcoming feature, tentatively titled My Hero Academia The Movie, will feature an original story that takes place after the events of Season 6 with the collapse of safe society. Original manga creator Kohei Horikoshi is serving as the general supervisor and original character designer on the project, which currently has no release date. Bones, the animation studio for all six seasons, is also returning to the helm.
“Hello everyone, I’m Kohei Horikoshi author of My Hero Academia,” reads Horikoshi’s statement to Shueisha regarding the announcement. “A 4th movie for [My Hero Academia] has just been confirmed! And that’s thanks to your support, thank you so much! Bones and Toho are already working on new seasons of the anime nonstop, so I was really surprised when they told me there would be a new movie. I couldn’t help but think back to my childhood, when a new Dragon Ball movie was released every year. Those made my so excited that I remember sitting in the movie theater with my heart racing like crazy.”
“So I hope the new generation of kids around the world can enjoy this movie just as much as me back then,” Horikoshi continued. “It’ll take place after the War from Season 6, meaning that the collapsed society will be the stage this time. After having been through so much and learning so many things, who will Deku and his friends fight against this time? What will they protect?! Look forward to it!”
The anime’s sixth season premiered in October 2022, and aired for two continuous cours (quarter of a year) for a total of 25 episodes. Covering the Paranormal Liberation War (chapters 258 to 306) and the Dark Hero arcs (chapters 307 to 328), it marks the official end of protagonist Izuku Midoriya’s stint as a vigilante hero. Production on Season 7 was greenlit in March this year, but a release date has yet to be set.
