New additions to the roster include notable voice actors Houko Kuwashima (Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa), Ayane Sakura (Your Lie in April) and Jun Fukuyama (Code Geass). Mitsuo Fukuda is helming the film at Bandai Namco Filmworks, and was the director for both seasons of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed series.

He co-wrote the script with his late wife, Chiaki Morosawa, and Liu Goto. The character designer of the original anime, Hisashi Hirai, is also serving as character designer on the project.

The release of the movie will mark 18 years since it was first announced at the Sony Music Anime Festival in May 2006. According to Fukuda, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM will be a sequel to the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny, and is slated for release in Japan on 26 January 2024.

The feature is part of the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Project ignited initiative, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed anime. Other projects in this initiative include a new Mobile Suit Gundam Seed game, and a Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Eclipse side-story manga.
