Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney Is Spider-Woman In Sony’s ‘Madame Web’

Say this quickly: Sydney Sweeney is swinging into cinemas as Spider-Woman.

The Euphoria star has confirmed her role in Sony and Marvel’s upcoming Madame Web movie. In an interview with Variety where the star talked about losing co-star Angus Cloud, her family and her career thus far, Sweeney revealed that she is playing Julia Carpenter in Madame Web.

Julia Carpenter, as most Marvel fans would know, is Spider-Woman.

“I was freaking out, of course,” Sweeney said about booking the role. “I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.”

Created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, Julia Carpenter first appeared in Secret Wars #6. She became Spider-Woman and then went on to take on the mantles of the second Arachne. She later became the second Madame Web.

While superhero fatigue is still affecting box office numbers, Sweeney is confident that Madame Web will break through.

“I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be,” teased the actress.

Sweeney was first attached to the project in March 2022 but her role was still kept under wraps. Now that it’s out on the web, Sweeney hopes that her Madame Web character will have an expanded role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When asked about a potential Spider-Woman potential stand-alone movie, all Sweeney did was give a shrug and a smile.

Aside from Sweeney, Madame Web also stars Dakota Johnson as the titular character, as well as Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet in undisclosed roles.

It is directed by S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.

Madame Web is slated to premiere on 16 February 2024.
