‘Minecraft’ Blocks NFTs & Blockchain, Citing Fraud And Security Reasons

In a popular move against an increasing trend, Minecraft developers Mojang have come out and stated their position around non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain, essentially banning all of them from ever appearing in the game.

In a statement shared via the official Minecraft website, the company stressed that the growing concerns over NFTs when it comes to security issues, fraud, and more meant that this was never going to be a thing Mojang will embrace.

“In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we outline how a server owner can charge for access, and that all players should have access to the same functionality. We have these rules to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. NFTs, however, can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft,” the statement read.

“As such, to ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilised to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods.. “

There already have been companies who are trying to leverage Minecraft in order to push NFT implementations, and with this new ruling, those plans will go up in smoke.

That is not to say that Mojang will not be exploring the possibilities when it comes to blockchain technology in Minecraft. Rather, there are still too many doubts and issues for it to be implemented safely and effectively. As such, the company will monitor the evolution of the technology to see if it would be possible to use the tech.

For players that are afraid of more NFTs encroaching into their gaming space, this move by Mojang will definitely put their minds at ease.
