Maze Runner Reboot Eyes ‘Alien: Covenant’ Writer

Hit young adult (YA) book franchises had their film adaptation peak in the 2010s, or so fans thought it would stay that way. Ten years later, the teenagers that used to enjoy these films have grown up. And the nostalgia factor still draws in crowds, if the sheer amount of fans that turned up to watch The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes is anything to go by. Maze Runner seeks to do the same with a surprise reboot announcement, with Alien: Covenant writer Jack Paglen in talks to pen the script for the new film.

After five years, following Disney’s 2019 CinemaCon announcement that more movies were on the way, we finally have an update on the future of the Maze Runner film series. Most of the production crew who worked on the original film trilogy will be back, with director Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) returning as producer, along with Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman (Stargirl), and Marty Bowen (Turtles All the Way Down).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Maze Runner reboot is not a retelling of the original trilogy or a direct sequel, but instead will have new characters and continue the events the films’ plot set in motion. The trilogy previously starred Dylan O’ Brien (Teen Wolf), Kaya Scodelario (The Gentleman), and Ki Hong Lee (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt).

Whether the Maze Runner reboot will be able to replicate the feel and success of the original remains to be seen, but there’s plenty of material to work with.
