Sing, Muse, of Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic journey The Odyssey which has officially unveiled its first look at Matt Damon as the legendary hero Odysseus. Set to premiere on 17 July 2026, this epic retelling of Homer’s classic poem brings Nolan’s signature scale and vision to one of the greatest stories ever told.
Universal Pictures has released the first image of Damon in character, clad in full Greek battle regalia, complete with a plumed helmet, cape, and gauntlets. The profile shot captures a hardened, war-weary Odysseus — a fitting first glimpse of the hero whose decades-long struggle to return home after the Trojan War defines the ancient epic. Damon, a frequent Nolan collaborator, takes on his first leading role under the director’s helm after notable supporting turns in Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
The film marks Nolan’s return to the screen following the success of 2023’s Oppenheimer and is reportedly one of his most ambitious projects to date. With a budget of US$250 million, The Odyssey surpasses both Tenet and The Dark Knight Rises in scale. Nolan has once again chosen to shoot on IMAX film, bringing Homer’s sweeping odyssey to the biggest screens in a format designed to immerse viewers in the hero’s perilous voyage across stormy seas, mystical islands, and legendary encounters.

An ensemble cast as vast as Odysseus’ journey itself joins Damon on this adventure. Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o are just some of the A-list names set to appear. The production also reunites Nolan with many of his frequent collaborators, including Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), Pattinson (Tenet), and Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer).
Nolan, known for his ability to merge intellectual storytelling with blockbuster spectacle, appears poised to deliver a cinematic odyssey worthy of its legendary source on 17 July 2026. As Odysseus once braved the wrath of gods, audiences now await to see how Nolan will navigate this iconic epic through his singular creative vision.
