12 days following its release in theatres on 17 July 2026, Christopher Nolan’s epic action fantasy film The Odyssey has surpassed an incredible milestone, as the film has now garnered over US$700 million at the global box office, making it one of the top-performing movies of the year.
As reported by Variety, the film grossed US$320.5 million domestically and US$407.4 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to US$727.9 million. With this, The Odyssey now sits in fourth place on Hollywood’s top releases of 2026, behind Toy Story 5 (US$1.02 billion), The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (US$1.001 billion) and Michael ($1.001 billion). Still, with the rate it’s going, the film is set to join the billion-dollar club in the coming week.
What’s sure to add to The Odyssey’s already strong performance is its opening in regions like China, where it’s set to premiere on 14 August. The region is the world’s second-biggest moviegoing market, and with the film expected to launch on roughly 800 IMAX screens across the country, this is sure to boost its earnings by a large margin when it finally releases.
Adapted from Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem and starring Matt Damon (Interstellar) as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, The Odyssey marks the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras and cost US$250 million, making it director Nolan’s most expensive film to date. The film is also set to be the highest-grossing in his repertoire, as inching closer to the previous record holder, 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises (US$1.08 billion).
The film also features an ensemble cast, including Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, and Zendaya as Athena.
Despite its strong performance, The Odyssey still faces tough competition for the top spot in Hollywood’s hall of fame for 2026, notably Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is on track for a record-breaking opening weekend based on worldwide pre-sales. Another Marvel flick, December’s Avengers: Doomsday, is no doubt on many fans’ most-anticipated movies list, so it remains to be seen how The Odyssey stacks up against these two heavy hitters.
