The four Commander Decks, based on Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV, each spotlight a major protagonist and introduce new mechanics reflecting their respective games. Terra, Herald of Hope leads the red-white-black Revival Trance deck, inspired by Final Fantasy VI. Built around graveyard recursion and iconic allies like Locke and Celes, this deck allows players to resurrect fallen heroes and channel powerful Trance abilities. Terra herself can fly into battle and raise creatures from the grave, evoking the magic and sacrifice at the heart of her journey.

From Final Fantasy VII, Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER helms the red-green-white Limit Break deck, focusing on equipment and power boosts. True to the game’s combat mechanic, Cloud gains abilities when his power exceeds seven, creating Treasure tokens to accelerate gameplay. Players can expect familiar faces like Tifa, Aerith, and Sephiroth to appear as well.

The Final Fantasy X-themed deck, Counter Blitz, introduces Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian, leading a green-white-blue strategy built around counters and teamwork. Drawing from Final Fantasy X’s signature sport, Blitzball, this deck thrives on sharing counters and buffing allies. Tidus can transfer counters between creatures and draw cards through his unique “Cheer” ability, making him a versatile commander.

From the MMO Final Fantasy XIV, Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed commands the white-blue-black Scions & Spellcraft deck, built for control and spellcasting strategies. Her abilities reward players for casting spells and dealing damage, while drawing cards after opponents lose life.

Beyond these Commander decks, Wizards of the Coast has confirmed the Final Fantasy set will be fully draftable, with cards spanning the entire mainline series from Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy XVI. Fans can choose between a Standard Edition (US$69.99) or a Collector’s Edition (US$149.99), which features premium Surge Foil treatments.

The set continues Magic: The Gathering’s recent trend of high-profile collaborations through its Universes Beyond series, following crossovers with franchises like Doctor Who, The Lord of the Rings, and Fallout. Legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano, whose iconic designs have defined Final Fantasy’s visual style for decades, is contributing special artwork for the set. Amano will join WeeklyMTG to discuss his involvement.

With its deep respect for Final Fantasy’s legacy and a fresh approach to Magic: The Gathering gameplay, one thing is certain: Whether you’re summoning Espers, activating Limit Breaks, or calling forth the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, Final Fantasy’s world is ready to become your new battlefield on 13 June.
