Marvel Head Kevin Feige Plans To Recast X-Men, Tony Stark & Steve Rogers After ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is about to receive some fresh faces for some of its iconic heroes in the near future, as studio chief Kevin Feige has announced that following 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, it will recast the mutant team for the upcoming X-Men movie, and eventually, other famous roles like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.

This news comes following Feige’s recent conversation with the press, where he spoke on the past, present, and future of the MCU. He explained that for future films, X-Men characters who appeared in past movies will be recast with new actors, alongside additional mutants that will make their big-screen debut. According to Feige, this decision matches the storyline of the original 2015 Secret Wars comic book series, which saw the collapsing of the timelines, changing up some characters in the process.

“You can look at the Secret Wars comics for where that takes you — it very much sets us up for the future,” he said, “Endgame, literally, was about endings. Secret Wars is about is about beginnings.”

“Reboot is a scary word,” he added, explaining that the studio would categorise these changes as a “reset” for the MCU instead, “Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines… [and] X-Men is where that will happen next.”

The movie in question, Jake Schreier’s (Thunderbolts*) upcoming MCU X-Men reboot, is already in the process of laying its groundwork, although it has not received any plot details or release window as of yet. But according to Feige, its premise of adolescent mutants makes it perfect for introducing new faces. “They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong,” he said. “That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”

Additionally, Feige also hinted that other characters will also see a recast, including notable roles like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, citing the success of other film franchise reboots like James Gunn’s recent Superman and Amazon’s upcoming Bond film. “I think there is more fun to be had with both of those characters,” he explained. “But we’ll see where.”
