Bob the Builder is getting an animated movie directed by Jennifer Lopez set in Puerto Rico, with In The Heights star Anthony Ramos playing Roberto “Bob”, who travels to Puerto Rico for a major construction job.
If you’re wondering how Bob the Builder can be turned into a feature-length movie, the plot sees Bob solving the island’s problems while figuring out what it means to build. The movie is a step in the right direction for representation, celebrating the vibrant and colorful textures of the Caribbean Latin nations and their people.
Lopez’s work as producer comes after several stints as producer on films like Atlas and Hustlers. Felipe Vargas, who will make his debut in horror film Rosario, serves as the movie’s screenwriter. No director has been attached to the movie yet. While the film is in untested waters, it’s difficult to mess up something like Bob the Builder, so whatever direction the movie takes is a safe bet.
There’s been much discourse surrounding Mattel’s decision to update Bob the Builder’s appearance, after old-school Bob got a 2015 makeover that took away most of the character’s lovable appeal, and fans can only hope that the animated version will do him justice this time. Bob the Builder is part of Mattel’s plans for a wider cinematic universe, with planned movies like Polly Pocket and Hot Wheels in the works.
