‘Indiana Jones 5’: Phoebe Waller-Bridge Plays Indy’s Goddaughter, Who Is A “Mystery And A Wonder”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is on a roll, and her hot streak isn’t about to end anytime soon. Following an impressive outing on Fleabag, Killing Eve, and Solo: A Star Wars Story, the actor is gearing up for her next big adventure: Indiana Jones 5.

The final entry of the franchise will put her in role of Helena, the granddaughter of Henry Jones Jr. aka Indy. In an interview with Empire, Waller-Bridge teased that her on-screen character is “a mystery and wonder”, but keeps everything else under wraps. There are glimpses of her personality from others involved in the project — director James Mangold, for instance, described her as “slippery, charming, the girl next door, a grifter.” Harrison Ford, who will reprise his role as Indy for the last time, meanwhile shared that Helen is “a pioneer in ethical accounting.”

That’s…a whole lot of adjectives, which makes it difficult to place just exactly how she will be as a character. For Mangold himself, Barbara Stanwyck’s role in 1941 screwball comedy The Lady Eve served as the framework for Helena’s characterisation, with Waller-Bridge commenting, “I was like, ‘Oh yeah, sure, I’ll just do my Barbara Stanwyck. IT’S AN IMPOSSIBLE FEAT.” Emphasis on the last part, as seen.

Indiana Jones 5 is releasing on theatres on 30 June 2023, and will star a de-aged Ford, who is now 80 years old. He is joined by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, who plays main antagonist Voller, a character partly modelled after real-life Nazi-turned-NASA-engineer Wernher von Braun. Much of the story hasn’t been revealed yet, but producer Frank Marshall thinks fans are going to love it. A newly-revealed set of images has also given a first look at the characters.
