Hey You Guys! ‘The Goonies’ Are Back With A Sequel!

Grab your truffle shuffles and dust off your pirate hats, because The Goonies sequel is reportedly back on track. The beloved 1985 classic, directed by Richard Donner, followed a group of kids on a high-stakes adventure to uncover pirate treasure while evading a ruthless crime family. The original cast, including Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton, left an indelible mark on audiences, cementing the film’s legacy as a cultural touchstone.

Recent reports suggest Warner Bros. is revisiting its iconic franchises, including The Goonies. According to Deadline, Chris Columbus, who penned the screenplay for the original film, is developing a treatment for the sequel. Columbus has been involved in previous discussions with Donner, Steven Spielberg, and Lauren Schuller Donner to explore the idea of a follow-up. His return offers a glimmer of hope for fans eager to see the story continue, but the project remains in its early stages.

Given the nearly four-decade gap since the original film, the sequel will likely focus on a new generation of adventurers, potentially the children of the original Goonies. This approach would align the sequel with the current trend of legacy storytelling, bridging the past and present.

However, the involvement of the original cast remains uncertain. Ke Huy Quan has seen a career resurgence following his Oscar-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Meanwhile, Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, and Martha Plimpton continue to enjoy successful careers. Jeff Cohen, now an entertainment lawyer, has retired from acting, making his potential return unlikely.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the sequel’s direction, fan interest remains strong. Astin has been particularly vocal, sharing a fan-made poster on social media with a call to action for Spielberg. Feldman and Quan have also expressed a desire to return to the franchise. The film has inspired projects like Stranger Things, in which Astin appeared, and Disney+’s Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Parallel to this news, Warner Bros. is also reviving the Gremlins franchise. Columbus is reportedly attached to a new Gremlins movie, following the success of the animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The prequel show, which debuted on Max in 2023, explored the origins of Gizmo’s original owner, Sam Wing, in 1920s Shanghai. A second season, The Wild Batch, expanded the story, taking the characters to San Francisco. Despite past failed attempts at a third Gremlins film, Columbus’s involvement signals renewed momentum for the mischievous creatures’ return to the big screen.

Warner Bros. has yet to confirm whether The Goonies and the Gremlins sequels will proceed beyond Columbus’ treatment phase. While challenges remain, Columbus’ involvement could provide the momentum needed to bring the projects to fruition. For now, the iconic cry, “Goonies never say die,” continues to fuel anticipation for what’s to come.
