HBO Ditches Jon Snow ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-off For Arya Stark Sequel Series

Winter may be over, but the legacy of House Stark lives on…well, sort of. Following the cancellation of a spin-off focused on Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington in the series, HBO is turning its attention to his (half-)sister, Arya Stark, making her the focus of a sequel series reported to be in the works.

Game of Thrones Arya Stark Sequel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script is being written by Quoc Dang Tran, best known for Apple TV’s Drops of God, with development in the earliest stages. No actors were listed, including Maisie Williams, who portrayed the character across all eight seasons, and story details remain under wraps, but sources claim that it will follow Arya’s adventures in the land of Essos, the Mediterranean-inspired land that lies across the Narrow Sea.

While Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin declined to comment on the subject matter in detail, he previously hinted at a reunion with Williams in 2024, writing in a blog post, “We also got together with Maisie Williams for pizza and pasta, and talked about… well, no, better not get into that, do not want to jinx it. But it could be so much fun.”

The report also revealed specifics about the scrapped Jon Snow project, including Harington’s role in pushing for a darker take on the series that reintroduced the White Wolf “as a broken man with PTSD”, and his idea of having his on-screen persona die alone, rather than redeem himself as a hero.

It remains to be seen if the Arya Stark sequel will get to see the light of day, but fans can expect plenty more stories within the fantasy world. Martin and HBO have laid out a roadmap of upcoming projects in the vein of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the next two seasons of House of the Dragon, the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms spin-off, which has landed an early renewal ahead of its 2027 premiere. At least one other offshoot has also been confirmed, coming in the form of a series starring Aeron the Conqueror, set roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

No release date was announced for the standalone Arya Stark adventure.
