Google Wallet Marks Global Return With New Features, Though Select Markets Will Retain GPay

What’s in a name? For Google Wallet, it seems that the more things change, the more things…revert back to what it was before.

Back in 2018, it was announced that Google Wallet would evolve into Android Pay which eventually became Google Pay or GPay. Fast forward to Google I/O 2022, the original name is back once again and allows users to store their cards and facilitate contactless payments.

For certain markets, like Singapore, the GPay app and naming convention will remain while gaining access to the new Google Wallet.

After all, there have been massive campaigns undertaken by Google in Singapore to ensure they’ve stayed on top of the contactless payment game.

With the new Google Wallet, users will be able to add flight tickets and concert tickets to the wallet and in doing so the app will be able to send you reminders about the event as the date nears.

The interesting thing is, that we’ve seen these features before. With Google Travel / Trips and Gmail, these apps send you reminders for reservations and concerts as well. It’s a fair bit of duplication of features that Google adds and removes from their services from time to time.

Now, with Google Wallet at the forefront once again, the ideal is that it can be a one-stop-shop for all things payments and cards all in one place.

Either way, Google Wallet and GPay will continue to coexist alongside each other until one product team emerges triumphant.
