‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Stomps Into Theatres Two Weeks Early, Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ Delayed

Where one takes a step forward, the other takes a step back. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the upcoming fifth entry in the Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse series, will hit theatres two weeks earlier than planned, opening on 29 March 2024 instead of 12 April.

Previously, the date was occupied by Parasite director Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, with its release now pushed back due to post-strike production strikes. A new date is expected to be announced soon.

The delay doesn’t come across as a surprise, considering the lack of a trailer. In contrast, Godzilla x Kong has already dropped a full-length trailer, featuring the two apex kaiju banding together to fight against a common Kong-like enemy. Alongside an epic showdown, the creature feature is also set to delve deeper into the mysteries of the Hollow Earth.

Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs. Kong, is returning to helm the film. Terry Rossio, Jeremy Slater and Simon Barrett serve as writers, while Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle will reprise their roles as Dr. Illene Andrews, Bernie Hayes, and Jia, respectively.

Meanwhile, Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. While plot details remain sparse, the 2022 novel that it’s adapted from centres on a man — known as an expendable — on a mission to colonise a distant planet. As a disposable employee, these “expendables” are tasked to take on the most dangerous jobs during the mission. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. Mickey 17, as the title suggests, is the story’s protagonist.
