Geek Review – Onitsuka Tiger Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Mexico 66 SD

Since its debut back in January 2018, Onitsuka Tiger’s MEXICO 66SD has been a popular choice amongst adopters of the iconic Japanese shoe brand. Based on the original MEXICO 66, there is no doubting the many innovations made to the newer design has been received well.

And the fact that the latest reskin involves everyone’s favourite lightning kick dishing Hong Kong martial artist, Chun-Li, just makes it even sweeter as sneaker brand helps celebrate the 30th anniversary of Capcom’s Street Fighter.

Adorned with a generous splash of colour, the Acid Yellow x Soft Yellow Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Mexico 66 SD certainly turns it up a notch when it comes to getting noticed. The outstanding feature of the signature Chun-Li dragon pattern is eye-catching from afar, and even more impressive up close.

However, it would still be hard to notice the connection to the iconic video game character, if not for the trademark heel flaps. On one side is the Onitsuka Tiger logo, while the Street Fighter logo takes centre stage on the other.

Outside of the Street Fighter connection, this variation of the MEXICO 66SD carries on the torch for the thin sole and classic Onitsuka Tiger stripe, as well as the aforementioned heel flap. It also sports a much more contemporary silhouette and is slimmer at that.

It is inside the shoes that will make any aspiring combatant happy. The fuzeGEL-powered portions of the toe and heel make for comfortable wearing, aided by a different density of fuzeGEL along the midsole to enhance that sense of comfort.

Put all that together with an OrthoLite insole, and the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Mexico 66 SD is easily one of the most comfortable pairs of sneakers around with ample cushioning. While we would not recommend getting into fights or running with them, the shoes are perfect for prolonged wear without giving you sore feet.

The rubber sole provides plenty of traction, and performs admirably even on wet surfaces, and will hold you in good stead when you are out and about, be it dry or wet.

However, instead of having a choice between leather or suede for the upper, the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Mexico 66 SD goes with the more texturised suede. This might be an issue in rainy weather as it may leave discoloured patches here and there, but otherwise adds a rugged feel to the sneakers.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Mexico 66 SD Profile

With only 120 pairs of the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Mexico 66 SD available here in Singapore, this is indeed a rare pair that we will highly recommend sneakerheads to cop, be it for style or for collecting. At S$229, it is an investment, to say the least, but to feel like you can kick ass like Chun-Li and still look stunning, it is an easy choice.

The Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Mexico 66 SD are available exclusively at Onitsuka Tiger Ngee Ann City and selected Onitsuka Tiger retail outlets.
