Geek Culture Marks Return To Cinemas With First Full Public IMAX Hall Since March 2020, With ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

It would take a miracle to mark a full return to cinema halls in Singapore after the pandemic and luckily, Geek Culture has a little help from the world’s greatest sorcerer.

To celebrate the recent opening of Singapore, where crowds can gather with minimal restrictions, as well as the global opening of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Geek Culture, the region’s leading online entertainment, tech and gaming media, marked the occasion with Singapore’s first full-fledged hall booking at Shaw Lido IMAX, the first public hall booking since pandemic measures were rolled out in Singapore since March 2020.

In an effort to gather fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe across the country, and to rally efforts to highlight the very public and well-regarded return to cinema halls, Geek Culture invited partners, and identified and assembled fans who would appreciate watching the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on opening night, together with other like-minded fans who can appreciate the much-missed community experience of catching a blockbuster movie in IMAX on its opening day, and in a fully booked cinema hall.

Long-time comics and MCU fan Dominic Khoo, who is also the founder and CEO of WatchFund, reckons that it has been too long since audiences could indulge in a paid public screening that includes an army of fans cheering for their heroes.

“I remember watching all the Avengers movies on opening night, and there’s nothing quite like a public gathering of fans who are instantly connected by what we see on the big screen. Such experiences are to be enjoyed as a collective, and I’m glad Geek Culture and partners managed to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with my team,” says Mr Khoo.

Alongside invited guests and partners, 100 pairs of opening night tickets to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in IMAX were given out to members of the public and fans of the MCU.

“Regardless of multiverse, watching movies is an experience best enjoyed on the big screen and with fellow fans in the hall, as everyone enjoys the spirit of catching a blockbuster for the first time. We’ve missed watching a major movie alongside fellow fans in a full hall, and today, we’re gathered to finally catch the inevitable cameos and revelations that only a Marvel Studios movie can bring. And as cinema fans, we know the only way to enjoy the movie is in IMAX glory, and we wanted to share this experience with fans across Singapore,” noted Yonk, co-founder of Geek Culture.

“We are thankful that Shaw cinemas were open to us making the first full IMAX hall booking for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, and to Disney Singapore for opening this movie in Singapore today, ahead of the US premiere on May 6, for a truly world’s first cinematic experience. We hope that fans will never have to experience movie watching with limited capacity halls ever again.”
