‘Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3’ Director Assures Sequel Is On Schedule

While fans eagerly await the next chapter in Square Enix’s reimagining of the classic RPG Final Fantasy VII, game director Naoki Hamaguchi has come forward to assure that development on part three of the remake trilogy is going well.

Speaking to Comicbook on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s Nintendo Switch 2 port, which arrives in June 2026, Hamaguchi was asked about the next entry in the remake trilogy, to which he explained that “the development itself is proceeding on time and on schedule”. While he kept his cards close to his chest, he did tease that “preparations toward the announcement are steadily underway”, so hopefully fans won’t have to wait too long before they get their first look at part three, which to date has not yet received an official subtitle.

The remake of the classic 1997 RPG was split into three chapters, with the first, simply titled Final Fantasy VII Remake, launching in 2020, followed by its sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, in 2024. If the studio were to follow this rough timeline, this could mean the third and final chapter in the trilogy would only release closer to the end of 2027, so an official game announcement during the latter half of this year seems likely.

While Hamaguchi did not reveal any new details about the remake’s third chapter, he had previously teased that the title would be adopting a more concise storytelling approach compared to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, explaining that the team is “striking a balance on how story arcs are told and spread out so as to ensure that the game feels a bit more concise.”

Part three is also set to introduce locations not yet featured in the remake trilogy, with Hamaguchi hinting during an interview with Bloomberg earlier this year that Wutai, the home nation of protagonist Yuffie Kisaragi, will likely make an appearance, and that the game will also feature flying as a big part of its expanded Highwind “gameplay experience”.
