The actor last played John Connor, son of Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. In the film, Connor was a young teen pursued by a new breed of Terminator, the T-1000. Furlong will be making a return to the role for the first time since Terminator 2

Other actors have portrayed Connor in subsequent Terminator sequels, such as Nick Stahl playing an older John Connor in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and Christian Bale taking on the role for 2009’s Terminator Salvation

When trying to explain the reason for the original actors returning for Dark Fate, director Tim Miller said, “In the Terminator universe there is only one timeline.”

Aside from Edward Furlong, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger will also be reprising their iconic roles, as Sarah Connor and T-800 respectively, for the sequel. The film will also star Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna.

The upcoming sequel, which will be ignoring all other Terminator sequels aside from Terminator 2, will deal with the fallout of Sarah’s decision at the end of the second film and her decision to destroy Cyberdyne Systems.

Now treat yourself to a new featurette for the film, unveiled at SDCC 2019.

Terminator: Dark Fate is expected to hit theatres on November 1, 2019
