SDCC 2019: Batman Beyond Gets Blu-ray Remaster Release In October

Batman Beyond has been hailed as one of the best animated gems of the modern era, and with good reason. Despite its debut two decades ago, the show’s masterful, bold, and unsettling take on the Dark Knight’s, well, darker side has continued to make an indelible impression on fans. It’s thus, more than apt that the series is getting a remastered release for its 20th birthday, in the form of Batman Beyond: The Complete Animated Series Limited Edition.

Scheduled for release digitally on October 15, 2019, and Blu-ray on October 29, the set will come with all 1,500 minutes of Batman Beyond across four discs. The proverbial icing on the cake sees the addition of bonus content as well, including a remastered version of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, 15 short reels about the series, and new audio commentary for four core episodes from the team.

The physical copy, meanwhile, is tied to an exclusive Batman Beyond Funko pop, alongside four lenticular art cards.

As the original show was produced on 35mm film, some effort went into the refining of existing visual content. Where 41 of the 52 episodes were successfully remastered with the removal of film grain, dust, and dirt for better colour and resolution, the remaining 11 damaged ones have been ‘Smart Rezzed’ to show improved image quality that’s unfortunately less sharp than the former. It’s definitely better than nothing, though.

The digital release is set to retail at US$49.99, while its Blu-ray counterpart will run at US$99.99. Pre-order is already live on Amazon in the States, so fans of the caped vigilante can hop over to check out the goods. The very good goods, in fact.
