E3 Officially Cancelled, Focus Turns To 2023 Show

E3 2022 Officially Cancelled, Focus Turns To Next Annual “Invigorated Showcase”

At the start of the year, there was still some hope that E3 2022 would be happening, albeit in a reduced, digital fashion. However, fast forward a few months, and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has officially announced that E3 2022 is no more. No physical show is happening, and neither will a digital one.

As confirmed following a statement made to IGN, the focus now is on the 2023 edition of the trade show.

“We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favourite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience,” said the official statement.

“We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.”

Needless to say, this was one move that the ESA would not have wanted to make, considering the conversations surrounding E3 as a whole. In addition to the pandemic affecting events like this, there has been a shift from publishers and studios alike to do their own shows than be part of the circus.

In place of E3 2022, Geoff Keighley has made the first move to fill the gap, announcing that Summer Game Fest will be happening in June.

Is this the end of E3 as a major trade show? With a commitment to making something happen in 2023, it remains to be seen. It would really hurt to lose what has been an institution in gaming, but as times change, so does the industry.
