John Wick: Chapter 4 introduced Caine, one of the world’s most dangerous assassins who was sent to kill John Wick, who was an old friend. The character was last shown in a face-off with Koji Shimazu’s daughter Akira, but his fate remained unknown, until now. Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), who plays Caine, will star as the blind assassin once more in a spin-off film of his own.
The film is set to begin filming in Hong Kong in 2025, with John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski returning to the project. Yen had previously pushed for his character to play a more active role in the story and criticised the Asian stereotypes an earlier draft, before Stahelski agreed to rework the character, creating Caine.
“Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience. The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil and Erica push themselves to create action, fights and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role,” Yen said in a statement.
Casting or plot details have not been revealed, but given the project’s timeline, it won’t be long before we get more news.
