Disney To Release More Theatrical Movies Directly On Disney+

With movie theatres around the world being shut down thanks to COVID-19, Disney’s Bob Iger has stated that audiences can expect more theatrical movies to be released directly on their streaming service Disney+.

One such movie to be heading straight to streaming is the upcoming Artemis Fowl film, though Iger states that fans shouldn’t expect to see major movies like Black Widow and Mulan straight on Disney+. The company has instead chosen to delay the movies’ releases to ensure they get released in theatres.

Instead, smaller movies such as Artemis Fowl will probably be the ones getting the Disney+ treatment.

There are some we’ve decided to put on Disney+. We already announced one, Artemis Fowl, that would have been released in theatres. Others we’ve simply delayed. In some cases, we’ve moved things onto Disney+ faster than we would have. Frozen 2 was one of them, but Onward would be the biggest example. It was in theatres when this happened. We moved to a pay-per-view period for a couple of weeks where people could buy it and own it. And then we ended up putting it on Disney+. In terms of movies going ahead after Artemis, there may be a few more that we end up putting directly onto Disney+, but for the most part a lot of the big tentpole Disney films, we’ll simply wait for slots. In some cases, we’ve announced new ones already, but later on in the calendar.

For now, we can only wait and see what other films Disney deems small enough to be released directly on Disney+.
