Matthew Vaughn Teases ‘Kick-Ass 3’ Spin-Off, Calls It Reboot With New Cast

Director Matthew Vaughn may be juggling his upcoming spy extravaganza, Argylle, set to release on 2 February 2024. However, he still has a soft spot for his beloved and gritty superhero series, Kick-Ass.

Kick-Ass 2

For years, rumors and speculations about a third Kick-Ass film have swirled since Kick-Ass 2 graced screens in 2013. Now, a decade later, Vaughn has some exciting news for fans eagerly anticipating the long-anticipated threequel. At New York Comic-Con 2023, Vaughn revealed to SYFY WIRE, “Big update: That [we’re going to] start filming ‘Kick-Ass The Reboot.”

Describing this next installment as “like nothing that’s ever been done on film before,” Vaughn is determined to take the franchise in a fresh and daring direction.

While remaining tight-lipped about the specifics, Vaughn hinted at another secret project, which he later unveiled as a musical during his panel. Once Argylle and the mysterious musical project are in the can, it’ll be all systems go for the new Kick-Ass adventure.

Vaughn expressed his excitement, saying, “Which is very, very exciting. Because I felt with Kick-Ass, I would like to make a Kick-Ass 3 with those characters, but I think we just need to use a sorbet shall we say to cleanse everyone’s palate, remind everyone that Kick-Ass is crazy and different. This movie will be talked about like, everyone like ‘What did they go and do?’”

Kick-Ass 2

As for what fans can anticipate from the new Kick-Ass, Vaughn assures, “It’s the spirit of the first Kick-Ass done in a modern way.”

The initial Kick-Ass introduced us to the earnest but foul-mouthed high school student Dave Lizewski, an eternal outsider and comic book enthusiast, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Despite lacking superpowers or any real skills, he embarks on a journey to become a superhero.

Along the way, he encounters a cast of vibrant characters more comfortable with the superhero and supervillain lifestyle than he is, yet he remains the ultimate underdog audiences can’t help but support.

Kick-Ass 2, Hit-Girl

Many of these cherished characters returned in 2013’s Kick-Ass 2. The sequel followed Dave once more as he joined a superhero group known as “Justice Forever,” all while Chloë Grace Moretz’s beloved character, Hit-Girl, tried (and, admittedly, failed) to live a normal life.

Currently, Taylor-Johnson is set to star in yet another comic book adaptation, Kraven the Hunter, while Moretz is fresh off her stint as the titular lead in Netflix’s Nimona. Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage, who also starred in the Kick-Ass films as Big Daddy, has a number of upcoming films, including Dream Scenario, Longlegs, and Arcadian.
