In an unexpected turn of affairs, Sandfall Interactive’s highly-anticipated role-playing game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has secured a live-action film adaptation even before its launch on 24 April.

The news comes by way of Variety, which reported that the French studio and Story Kitchen are bringing the big-screen version of the fantasy epic to life. No other details about the project, such as casting details or a release window, were revealed, with directorial decisions currently underway.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of Expedition 33 to the big screen,” said Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”
It’s difficult to fully grasp the idea, however, as there won’t be a reference point until the game’s release. First announced at Xbox Games Showcase last June, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set in a world inspired by Belle Époque France and follows the Paintress, described as “a god-like figure who annually paints a cursed number on her monolith, causing all individuals of that age to vanish.”
“As the number decreases each year, humanity faces impending extinction. Players follow Expedition 33 on a mission to end this cycle by confronting the Paintress before she paints death again,” reads the rest of its official description.

Hollywood veterans Andy Serkis and Charlie Cox will lead the voice cast for the forthcoming title, alongside rising talent Ben Starr of Final Fantasy XVI fame. Other notable cast include Shala Nyx (Cyberpunk 2077, The Old Guard) as warrior Sciel, Jennifer English (Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3) as Maelle, and Kirsty Rider (The Sandman) as Lune. Rich Keeble (Good Omens), Devora Wilde (Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3), Tracy Wiles (Baldur’s Gate 3), and Maxence Cazorla (Ineffable) are also part of the roster, though their roles remain under wraps.
The Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 adaptation is but one of the many projects under Story Kitchen’s banner. In addition to the Tomb Raider franchise (both the animated Netflix series and Amazon’s live-action TV and film projects), the company is developing Just Cause for Universal, Streets of Rage for Lionsgate, and Toejam & Early for Amazon.
