Chris Evans Denies MCU Return In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Chris Evans has addressed recent rumours about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, firmly stating that he has no plans to reprise his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other MCU project, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.

In an interview with Esquire, Evans directly refuted these claims, stating, “That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!”

Contrasting Evans’ statement, Anthony Mackie, who took over the Captain America mantle, had earlier conveyed to Esquire that he believed Evans might return based on information from his manager: “My manager showed me. He’s like, ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know. I haven’t seen a script.”

However, after speaking directly with Evans, Mackie shared, “I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired’.”

Despite stepping away from the role, Evans recently made a brief return to the Marvel universe in Deadpool & Wolverine. Instead of playing Steve Rogers, he reprised his earlier Fantastic Four role as Johnny Storm in what was clearly a comedic cameo rather than a serious reentry into the franchise.

Marvel’s current state of flux has contributed to the ongoing rumours. The franchise faced a significant shake-up after Jonathan Majors, originally positioned as the MCU’s next major villain, was removed from the series following his conviction for assault and harassment. Majors played Kang the Conqueror in several projects, with plans for the character to become the next Thanos-level antagonist. His removal left Marvel scrambling to rework its overarching story. Doctor Doom has since been announced as the new central villain, with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role. This unexpected casting decision fueled theories that other original Avengers might also return.

Actors denying involvement in major superhero projects is nothing new. Andrew Garfield famously insisted he was not involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home, only for fans to discover he had been misleading them when the film hit theatres. While Evans could be doing the same, his statements suggest that he genuinely has no interest in making a comeback.

Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers, is scheduled to release on 1 May 2026. Whether Evans will remain retired from the role or surprise audiences remains to be seen, but for now, he insists that Steve Rogers will not be part of the MCU’s future.
