‘Chainsaw Man’ Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s ‘Look Back’ Anime Film Hits Singapore In Aug

Japanese manga artist Tatsuki Fujimoto is best known for Chainsaw Man, but that doesn’t mean he has a lack of other works. Look Back, one of his more famous one-shot titles, is set to welcome more attention with an anime film adaptation, and Singapore will be in on the hype.

Following the release of its official trailer, Southeast Asian film distributor Encore Films dropped an English- and Chinese-subtitled trailer confirming an 8 August premiere. Yūmi Kawai (Sayonara, Girls) and Mizuki Yoshida (Alice in Borderland ) star in the animated feature, which opened in Japan on 28 June and earned 227 million yen (US$1.4 million) in its first three days.

The original one-shot debuted in 2021 on the Shonen Jump+ platform, with Viz Media and Manga Plus launching it digitally in English. The former published the manga in print in September 2022, alongside the following synopsis:

“The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.”

Look Back would go on to earn a nomination for 2023’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. The anime film is directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers), who also helmed the screenplay and character designs. Studio Durian handled the production, while singer urara is performing the main theme, “Light song”. Again, it releases 8 August in Singapore.
