‘Chainsaw Man’ Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s ‘Look Back’ Anime Film Drops Trailer

Manga creator Tatsuki Fujimoto is most known for Chainsaw Man, but the mangaka has also published several one-shots in Shonen Jump. One of his most famous one-shot works, Look Back, gained over 2.5 million reads when it was first serialised, and won several awards. A Look Back anime film adaptation was announced in February 2024, and recently released its first trailer.

The manga tells the story of former schoolmates Fujino and Kyomoto who are both talented artists who want to create manga, but after Kyomoto leaves to go to art college, Fujino continues working on her manga alone. A tragedy forces Fujino to look back on their shared past, as she finds her inspiration to create once more.

The trailer brings the manga to life, and the flashbacks of Fujino and Kyomoto’s lives add a touch of bittersweet foreshadowing, knowing how the story ends. It’s easy to see why the manga reached those readership levels when it was first published, and viewers are in for a ride of bittersweet heartbreak.

An official poster was also unveiled, which shows the duo hard at work on their manga-in-progress, Shark Kick. Yūmi Kawai (Sayonara, Girls) voices Fujino, and Mizuki Yoshida (Alice in Borderland ) voices Kyomoto, with Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers) directing.

The Look Back anime film will premiere on 28 June 2024 in Japan.
