When it comes to live service games, Bungie‘s Destiny and its sequel have been maintaining a committed player base for quite some time now, helped by a consistent stream of content that keeps players coming back for more. For those hoping for even more, however, there is some bad news. The Final Shape, the next expansion for Destiny 2, has been delayed.
The reveal comes after several rumours and reports, but Bungie has officially confirmed that the next expansion will now come on 4 June 2024, instead of the original 27 February release date.
In the blog post, Bungie shared that The Final Shape needed “more time to become exactly what [Bungie] want it to be.”
“The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together,” Bungie continued. “We want to honour that journey, so we’re taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come.”
With the company only recently experiencing major layoffs in October, this news shouldn’t be that surprising, especially as the reason given for the layoffs was due to the underperformance of Destiny 2 over the last year, as well as the low pre-order numbers for The Final Shape. It has become even more pressing that Bungie makes sure that this expansion will delight existing players, bring in new ones, and serve as a carrot for those who have left the live service title.
The fact that this expansion will take the form of episodic content is also something to look forward to. Unlike previous content, which came via four seasons in a year, fans will have to deal with a new format, and hopefully, it will be for the better.
