“Most of my stories start with whatever funk or crisis or feeling I’m living in, then I figure out how to explore that through speculative fiction,” said McDonnell, on drawing inspiration from her own experiences for her wider portfolio. “I love to do something unusual with form. I aim to surprise… And I try to write things that I want to watch.”

She joins Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge in bringing Lara Croft’s adventure to the Amazon Prime Video, who’s serving as executive producer on the project. No story details have been revealed yet, but it’ll reportedly be “dangerous and exciting” and feature Indiana Jones and James Bond influences.

According to earlier reports, Dmitri M. Johnson is also set to be part of the production via his own company, dj2 Entertainment. In addition to the Tomb Raider show, the producer has expressed interest in adapting other games like Life is Strange and Disco Elysium for Amazon as well.

The project will mark the first live-action project in the franchise after the 2018 movie starring Alicia Vikander. Meanwhile, its game division is collaborating with developer Crystal Dynamics on the next mainline Tomb Raider entry. There’s also an animated series currently in the works at Netflix, slated to release next year.
