‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Creators Returning For ‘Seven Havens’ Animated Sequel Starring Female Earthbender

It’s been 15 years since Avatar: The Airbender went down in history as one of the best animated shows ever but its legacy is far from over. In time for the original series’ 20th anniversary, Nickelodeon has greenlit a new series set in the world of the beloved classic, with original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko returning for the project.

Avatar: Seven Havens

Titled Avatar: Seven Havens, the follow-up to 2012’s The Legend of Korra centres on a female Earthbender, who discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra. There’s an interesting dark twist, however — in this dangerous era, the Avatar is seen as a harbinger of doom instead of a hero, after Korra integrated the spirit world and the main one at the end of the sequel.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Avatar: Seven Havens is set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its saviour. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilisation’s last strongholds collapse.”

The upcoming entry will run for 26 episodes, split into two parts (or “books”, in Avatar jargon) of 13 episodes each. Avatar: Seven Havens is in production from Nickelodeon Animation’s Avatar Studios banner, led by DiMartino and Konietzko as co-chief creative officers, with casting details and a premiere date to be announced later.

“When we created the original series, we never imagined we’d still be expanding the world decades later,” said the pair in a statement. “This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery, and a whole new cast of amazing characters.”

As part of its 20th-anniversary celebrations, the cable channel will also debut two new shows on the Avatar: The Last Airbender YouTube channel, add original content to the recently launched Avatar Legends YouTube channel, and is planning a celebration for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

But first, a new animated film is waiting in the wings. Scheduled to air this October, it features the voices of Dave Bautista and singer-songwriter Eric Nam as a villain character and Aang, respectively, as the original voice cast won’t be reprising their roles. Other ongoing projects include two more seasons of Netflix’s live-action adaptation, an AAA role-playing game by Saber Interactive, a Zuko-centric animated movie set for 2026, and more.
