‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ AAA RPG In Development By Saber Interactive

When the world needed them most, Saber Interactive is stepping up to the plate, helming the first AAA video game adaption of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Speaking to IGN, the studio and Paramount Game Studios revealed that an upcoming role-playing game (RPG) based on Nickelodeon’s 2005 animated series is in the works. The title will also be in collaboration with Avatar Studios, created in 2021 by original showrunners Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

In it, players assume the role of an “all-new, never-before-seen Avatar”, taking place thousands of years before the events of the animated series. According to Saber and Paramount, players will be “immersed in a vibrant world, master all four elements, engage in dynamic combat alongside companions, and experience the challenges and decisions that come with being the keeper of balance in the world.”

Saber Interactive is certainly no stranger to bringing IP-based games to life, with previous works including 2019’s World War Z and most recently, this year’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The studio is well-known for respecting the source material of the games they create, spelling good tidings for the upcoming title.

This sentiment was echoed by Doug Rosen, SVP of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount, who stated, “Saber Interactive has a proven track record in bringing IP-based games to life, and we are excited to co-fund this AAA title alongside them and let fans experience this world first-hand.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender has a pretty muddled history when it comes to video game adaptations, with releases such as its 2006 tie-in of the same name and 2023’s Quest for Balance receiving generally mixed reviews. Hopefully, Saber is up to the challenge and can finally provide fans with a video game worthy of such a legendary franchise.
