Atlus JRPG ‘Persona’ Gets Netflix Live-Action Series With ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Writer

Netflix is gearing up for a live-action Persona series, based on SEGA and Atlus’ hit JRPG franchise, with Christopher Monfette (Star Trek: Picard) attached as writer, alongside Story Kitchen and 21 Laps as producers.

Persona 5: The Phantom X (2025)

As reported by Variety, Monfette will also serve as the adaptation’s showrunner and executive producer alongside Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood of 21 Laps, Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen, and Toru Nakahara of SEGA.

While no further details of the adaptation, be it its plot or release window, have been revealed, the Persona JRPG franchise seems to be a perfect fit for a series adaptation, as the game already presents a strong focus on storytelling, with entries in the series usually focused on a group of Japanese students who have to balance school life and relationships during the day, while battling supernatural threats along the way.

The Persona franchise is developed by P-Studios, a division of Atlus, and published by SEGA, with six mainline entries spanning 1996 to 2025, with the latest title being Persona 5: The Phantom X. The series has also received a slew of spin-offs, such as the 202 action RPG Persona 5 Strikers, with the franchise itself being a spin-off of Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei franchise. Upcoming games from the franchise include a remake of the fourth game, Persona 4 Revival, which is due in February 2027, as well as its next mainline entry, Persona 6, which was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026.

Persona 3 Reload (2024)

This will also mark yet another video game adaptation hailing from Netflix, with the streamer already seeing success in the past with shows like The Witcher, Devil May Cry, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The streamer is also set for more adaptations to come, including a Gears of War prequel movie and an Assassin’s Creed live-action series.
